Data Quality: The Unglamorous Thing Everything Else Depends On

Every clever report, calculation, and agent is only as good as the underlying data. Data quality is the foundation nobody wants to fund.

Here's an uncomfortable truth: your slickest dashboard, your smartest agent, your most precise payroll, all of it is only as good as the data underneath. Data quality is the least glamorous investment in HCM and the one everything else quietly depends on. Garbage in, garbage out, dressed up in a nice interface.

Validate at the point of entry

The cheapest place to catch bad data is when it's entered. Validation rules, required fields, format checks, sensible defaults, stop rubbish at the door rather than cleaning it up forever downstream.

Profile what you already have

Most systems carry accumulated data debt, blanks, duplicates, impossible values. Periodically profile your data to find it, because you can't fix problems you haven't measured. The findings are usually worse than anyone expects.

Assign ownership for keeping it clean

Data quality that's nobody's job decays. Someone needs to own the standards and the ongoing cleanup, or every improvement erodes back to mush within a year.

Real scenario: a client couldn't trust their headcount reports, the numbers were always slightly off, and it turned out to be years of duplicate and orphaned records nobody owned. We profiled the data, cleaned it, added entry validation, and gave it an owner. The reports became trustworthy for the first time in years. Fund the foundation, everything above it depends on it.
